Brownfields redevelopment is both a challenge and an opportunity for economic developers. Dealing with contaminated property can be expensive, time consuming, and full of liability issues. However, there are tools and techniques to overcome many of these challenges, and the rewards can be great for those who take on the task. Brownfields redevelopment often provides the opportunity to reclaim valuable property in strategic locations that will increase the tax base; it can also improve neighborhoods by removing health hazards and eyesores.

Summary Report from Brownfields Roundtable, 2008 (PDF)
The Brownfields Roundtable was conducted on April 15th, 2008 during the IEDC 2008 Federal Forum in Alexandria, VA. The purpose of the roundtable was to enable EPA officials to interact with economic development professionals on effective strategies and solutions to emerging brownfield issues and challenges across the country. Practitioners, economic development professionals, and brownfields experts participated in the roundtable and this report is a summary of the discussion. Topics discussed include Brownfield Inventories, Land Revitalization and Local and Regional development, Mothballing, and Sustainability / Green Building / Return on Investment.

International Brownfields Redevelopment
This report describes and compares the approaches to redeveloping contaminated land in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany. Funded by a grant from the U.S. EPA, the publication reviews each country's regulatory environment, planning processes, redevelopment practices and funding sources. The focus extends beyond contaminated property issues to encompass redevelopment more broadly. Case studies help illustrate how different countries' economic and legal frameworks and social goals affect the redevelopment process.
