Lockheed Martin Seeks Airports with Large, Surplus Hanger Space

Lockheed Martin is in the preliminary phase of researching available airport locations that have hanger accommodations adequate for a C-5 aircraft. The concept of the potential project is to perform repair and/or modification work on C-5s. Each airplane would be in process about 60-150 days, depending on the tasks performed. At this time, work flow is estimated for a three year term with most of the touch labor force personnel hiring requirements expected from the local area. The basic requirement is to find an airport that has sufficient runway length, approx. 7,000 feet long, and runway bearing capacity of TDT - 750,000 pounds. The hangar must be able to accommodate an aircraft with the following dimensions:

  • Wing Span - 222.8 feet
  • Length - 247.8 feet
  • Vertical Tail Height - 65.1 feet vertical tail
  • Vertical Tail width - 68.75 feet at approximately top of the tail

The anticipated start date is early 2010 through possibly late 2010.

Current project estimates are as follows:

  • Approximately 40 New Jobs (the majority of which are estimated to be contracted touch-labor)
  • $5 million capital investment
  • $2-3 million estimated tail hut enclosure (if necessary)
  • $2 million equipment (overhead cranes, jacks, etc.)
