The U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) opened in Charlotte in November, 2006, and immediately made waves in the world of public/private partnerships. Developed at a cost of $35 million and containing 12 million gallons of water, the USNWC is the largest and most complex recirculating artificial whitewater river in the world. An official U.S. Olympic Training site, the not-for-profit USNWC was created through a private-public partnership incorporating the leadership and support of the governments, businesses, foundations, universities and individuals throughout the region. Learn how this partnership was put together and how this mammoth one-of-a-kind outdoor recreation facility is spurring tourism, economic growth and a focus on outdoor recreation on the Charlotte metropolitan region.

Charlotte’s South Corridor Light Rail Line opened in November, 2007, the first leg of an ambitious 25-year multi-modal transportation plan designed to provide transportation choices to the citizens of one of the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan areas. Developed at a cost of $462.7 million, Charlotte’s investment in this 9.6 mile light rail line has paid off by spurring $290 million in new construction and an additional $1.5 billion in announced projects along the corridor. But much of the transition hasn’t been easy. Learn the critical role of public-private partnerships in redeveloping this former blighted industrial corridor and see the transformation taking place before your eyes.

 Partnerships to Redevelop “Dead” Malls and Empty Big Boxes
Every community has failed and underperforming shopping centers. Most also have gaps in medical services. Older centers are being converted to medical malls, to solve both problems. National trends are summarized and detailed feasibility studies converting four shopping centers into four different types of medical malls are presented. Public/private ventures to undertake each mall are discussed, and technical handouts are provided.

Many different cities were considered for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The City of Charlotte was awarded the project and broke ground in January, 2007.
