IEDC Internships

IEDC offers an extensive internship program for graduate and undergraduate students for summer, fall and spring semesters. Our internships are organized into two different categories: technical and communications/marketing.

Technical internships are available to students in economic development, city and regional planning, public administration and public policy programs. Working on varied research-related projects, interns:

  • Gain practical work experience
  • Become familiar with a variety of economic development programs and issues
  • Have the opportunity to publish their work
  • Contribute to technical assistance projects for communities throughout the U.S.
  • Prepare reports, case studies, and presentations on economic development issues and trends

Applicants should have:

  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Familiarity with research and reporting methods
  • General knowledge and interest in economic development programs and issues
  • Willingness to work in team environment
  • Flexibility and desire to work on varying projects

Communications/Marketing internships are available to undergraduate students studying marketing, communications, journalism, program management, or event planning. Marketing interns support the Marketing and Member Services department through:

  • Marketing IEDC conferences, courses and other services. This includes Web 2.0 marketing strategies, including LinkedIn and Facebook.
  • Media relations
  • Preparation and event planning for various IEDC events
  • Sponsorship and exhibitor sales
  • Membership retention and recruitment programs
  • Job center and bookstore

Interns also have the opportunity to learn about economic development through interactions with experts, board members and staff during brown bag lunches organized during the summer. An intern and staff outing is also organized towards the end of the summer where interns are invited to participate.

Summer internships are full-time positions and require a minimum commitment of ten weeks. Fall and spring internship positions can be either full or part time, with a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Graduate student internships are paid positions. Undergraduate interns are not paid. Academic credit can be arranged, but must be set up by the student. Recent graduates and doctoral students are considered. All internships take place in Washington, DC. IEDC does not reimburse interns for travel and/or relocation costs.

Application Requirements:

  • One-page cover letter stating interest (clearly state whether you are applying for technical or marketing positions) and availability
  • Detailed resume, with recommendation letters (if available)
  • Brief writing sample, no longer than 6-pages. This can be an academic paper from a school project or other writing regarding relevant development issues. It is not required that the paper is related to economic development.
  • Recommendation letters and transcripts are optional.

Email all above attachments to Swati Ghosh at sghosh@iedconline.org.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for fall and spring positions. IEDC will review resumes as they arrive and schedule phone interviews when appropriate. ONLY candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

Important Note: The IEDC internships are highly competitive. In order for your application to be considered, please make sure that you submit ALL required documents. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Also, we are unable to provide status updates on individual applications, due to the large number of applications we receive. No phone calls please.
