Ranking states in the “new economy”

There’s no shortage of state rankings, whether it’s for tax burden, quality of life, or business friendliness. The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation’s (ITIF) State New Economy Index offers a more comprehensive report card that grades states on their ability to compete in the innovation and technology economy.

The index considers 25 indicators that measure the extent to which a state economy is “knowledge-based, globalized, entrepreneurial, IT-driven, and innovation-based.” Those indicators cover five main categories: 1) knowledge jobs, 2) globalization, 3) economic dynamism, 4) the digital economy, and 5) innovation capacity.

ITIF’s top five ranked states are: Massachusetts, California, Washington, Virginia, and Delaware.

A full scorecard that ranks performance across all 25 indicators is available here.
