Since the beginning of March 2020, countries across the globe have been in lockdown but while business has slowed, the jobs of economic developers has only increased to a frantic pace. This webinar will explore with firsthand accounts how economic developer's have adapted their roles to incorporate swift BR&E initiatives and pivoted to virtual investment attraction strategies. The presenters will discuss how they were able to mitigate these emerging challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Bruce Takefman, President at Research Consultants International FDI, Inc and Aaron Broissoit, CEO at Golden Shovel, will also shed light on how their firm's have adapted to digital programs to continue business recruitment initiatives and site selection; outlining tips and tricks to coordinate digital lead generation campaigns to offset the travel restrictions in place for the foreseeable future.

Aaron Brossoit is CEO and a founder at Golden Shovel Agency, a firm specializing in communications for economic development. He has led the creation of communication tools and services currently supporting over 180 economic development organizations across North America.

Aaron’s core competencies include web development, marketing strategy, branding and communications. He is a sought-after presenter and thought leader at industry conferences with a focus on new trends in business and workforce attraction. Aaron and his team pioneered the first virtual reality tools for the economic development industry and unveiled them at the 2017 IEDC Annual Conference in Toronto.

Joe Melvin has been the Director of Business Development for North Carolina’s Southeast since January 2008. His duties across the 18 county regional partnership include global marketing, client development and handling, strategic planning, and regional advocacy.

Joe manages the organization’s engagement with economic development projects, site consultants, regional/state/national allies, and leads the NCSE business attraction program. His professional background includes positions within state, regional, and local organizations. Joe received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Joe was awarded the designation of Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) by the International Economic Development Council in 2018 and recognized by Consultant Connect as one of North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers in 2020.

Michael M. Philpot, CEcD, is the Vice President of Economic Development for Jonesboro Unlimited and joined the organization in August of 2019. Jonesboro Unlimited is a bold, five-year strategic plan to increase economic prosperity in Jonesboro.

Mike began his economic development career in 1988 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was the Director of Economic Development for the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Shreveport Economic Development Foundation.

In 2017 Mike was asked to implement a new industrial development marketing and recruitment initiative for Delta Council in Stoneville, Mississippi. Future projects and relationships were established because of these efforts. Marketing missions across the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, and Germany have been a core responsibility in all the programs that Mike has worked.

Mike received his B.B.A in Management from Harding University in 1981, and his Master of Science in Community and Economic Development from the University of Central Arkansas in 2009. Professional development includes the Economic Development Institute—University of Oklahoma, Community Development Institute—University of Central Arkansas and the Georgia Tech Basic Economic Development Institute. Mike earned the designation of Certified Economic Developer—(CEcD) in 1993

Mike served as the Chairman of the Southern Economic Development Council in 2015. Mike is married to Robin and they have three sons- Garrett, Chase and Dalton. They have one perfect grandchild, Bonnie Rae.

Nicole Sedlacek, CEcD

Nicole Sedlacek is a Senior Economic Development Consultant for Nebraska Public Power District. As a Consultant, she works to help prepare communities and rural areas for economic development opportunities. Nicole joined the economic development team at NPPD in 2016. Prior to NPPD, Nicole served as the executive director for Holt County Economic Development for nine years.

She is a Certified Economic Developer, recognized by the International Economic Development Council. She is also certified as a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, helping people leverage their natural talents and gifts by aiming utilizing their CliftonStrengths.

In 2019, Nicole was appointed to office to serve on the Northeast Community College Board of Governors. Prior to being appointed, she had served as President of the College’s Foundation Board of Directors.

She is a past president of the Nebraska Economic Developers Association (NEDA) and a graduate of Leadership Nebraska. She received her degrees from Northeast Community College and Bellevue University. Nicole and her husband Brian, live in O’Neill, NE with their two daughters, Ally and Emma.
