Experts anticipate an acceleration in the use of automation, artificial intelligence, and robotics as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasingly, good jobs will demand a level of digital skills, and those who lack such skills will struggle to get and keep stable employment. Inclusive strategies for upskilling/reskilling workers, fostering entrepreneurship, and other approaches to fully engage workers in a more technology-focused economy will be critical.
The primary focus of this report will be on helping communities of color prepare for the future of work. They not only have been more adversely impacted by the pandemic, but already lagged other groups in terms of wages, educational attainment, health outcomes, etc., during the recovery from the Great Recession. Economic developers can and must assume a vital role in ensuring that people of color are able to acquire the skills necessary for the jobs of the future.
