Flood Recovery Project Wins Silver Award in Business Retention and Expansion Category September 29
The Howard County Economic Development Authority was awarded a Silver Award for their role in the Ellicott City Flash Flood Response and Recovery. The EDO worked with building and business owners as well as the Howard County Government to assist them in gaining access to facilities, navigating the permits and licensing process, and locating external real estate for temporary or permanent relocation.


Jeffrey A. Finkle Organization Leadership Award Granted to Alberta's Bev Thornton September 27
Ms. Thornton is a longstanding member of Economic Developers Alberta (EDA), currently serving as President of its board of directors. She was named EDA Economic Developer of the Year in 2013. San Diego wins Excellence in Economic Development Gold for Nonprofit Academy September 19
City of San Diego among winners to receive Excellence in Economic Development Awards during 2017 IEDC Annual Conference. The award was for its Nonprofit Academy, which is a partnership between the city and The Nonprofit Institute at University of San Diego, offering free, two-day educational workshops to more than 100 local nonprofits that provide — or intend to provide — essential services to San Diegans.


Florida Ranks as Second Best for Business Climate September 18
Second only to Texas, Florida grabs the number two spot or states with the best business climate. The assessment, which is conducted by Development Counsellors International (DCI) every three years, tracks economic development trends. The latest breakdown was released Monday at the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference in Toronto. In third, fourth and fifth place respectively are were Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

A different story on the same study discusses how the United States is less likely to see corporate expansion over the next three years.


Mesa's Office of Economic Development Accredited by IEDC September 15
After a review of its funding, structure, programs and staff, among other items, by an Accredited Economic Development Organization's subcommittee team members Mesa Office of Economic Development earns IEDC's most coveted stamp of excellence for EDOs. The AEDO accreditation, which is a peer-review process, must be renewed every three years. There are less than 65 EDOs in the entire world that carry the credential.


Walter Sprouse to Retire End for 2017 September 15
Walter Sprouse, named one of the top 50 economic developers of influence, announces retirement from the Augusta Economic Development Authority at the end of the year. Sprouse has served as the Executive Director of the Authority for the past fifteen years. During that time, more than $3 billion in new investments and more than 15,000 new jobs were created under his leadership. Among many credentials held by Sprouse, he's an Honorary Life Member and in the College of Fellows for the International Economic Development Council


Study Connects Local University to Economic Impact September 14
Campbellsville University supports a total of 1,509 jobs by all related Campbellsville University operations. The university's operations directly employ and support over 13.26 percent of all jobs in Taylor County. The study was conducted by Younger Associates. The firm's methodology is recognized by the International Economic Development Council and used in courses taught at the Economic Development Institute.
