Unaffordable for-sale single-family housing is no longer a problem confined to coastal urban markets. With homebuying out of reach for about one-third of the U.S. population, cities should encourage more apartment development, which will increase needed housing supply and do well for long-term investors.

The following EDOs received the highest honor in 2022: Greater New Orleans, Inc., Investissement Québec, the Tulsa (Okla.) Regional Chamber, the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County (Fla.), Invest Newark (N.J.), and the Greater Sacramento (Calif.) Economic Council.

After a natural disaster, while news headlines concentrate on immediate search and rescue efforts, the critical leadership work for economic developers and local officials is to address recovery challenges. IEDC, in partnership with ICMA (International City/County Management Association) and with funding from FEMA, has developed a series of in-depth case studies to highlight successful recovery strategies. According to the National Weather Service, the Moore, Oklahoma, area experienced 175 tornadoes from 1893 to 2021, including an F5 tornado in 2013 that killed 24 people, injured 212 others, and caused $2 billion in damage, including 2,400 homes, 90 businesses, two schools, a regional hospital, and extensive public infrastructure.
