Get to know Montez

How long have you worked in economic development?

I have worked in economic development for five years.

How did you enter the economic development profession?

Upon completion of my degree program from Harris Stowe State University, of which I obtained my bachelors in Urban Affairs concentrating in Urban Studies. I was able to gain a variety of experiences within the field of Economic Development. Two internships, specifically, further propelled my career into the Economic Development sector. First, being a ED Specialist intern at Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corporation. And secondly completing my two year fellowship with Lead For America Inc. There I was assigned to Beyond Housing Inc. where I created a 12- Week resource program for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

What is your favorite thing about working in economic development?

My favorite part about working in ED is BR&E. Being an Economic Development Specialist I am able to provide assistance and resources to local businesses and entrepreneurs while watching them grow and EXPAND their business. The E, in BR&E. :)

Tell us about the community or organization you represent.

The City of University offers suburban living while being in a diverse city that has around 35,000 residents. From great education to luscious tasting cuisines University City has everything plus more.

What makes your community a great place for business and people to thrive?

The Diversity and Education! University City is one of the most diverse neighborhoods to locate to in the St. Louis region. According to BestNeighborhood website, U City scores 84 out of 100 "which is much more diverse than many US cities". But also, if your business is in the search for local student talent, Washington University- St. Louis is in our backyard!

Tell us about your favorite place/thing to do in your community.

My favorite place in University City is the Delmar Loop. In 2007 the Delmar Loop was named one of 10 Great Streets in America. This creative and artistic corridor is the HEART and SOUL of University City, offering retail boutique stores, diverse restaurants, art galleries, music and entertainment. The Delmar Loop is one of the top attractions in St. Louis, Missouri.

If you had a message to those considering a career in economic development, what would it be and why should they enter the field?

Stay open to change and continue to research progressive cities and how they do things there. Don't be afraid to network and introduce yourself.

If you're passionate about making communities and the people inside of those communities prosper then this is the career for you.

What does economic development mean to you?

To me, Economic Development represents a colorful masterpiece that is currently being drawn. There are so many moving parts and components within economic development that help design a strong robust community. Whether that is creating community development programs, improving safety and security, encouraging health and well-being, enhancing our schools and education system, and much more. All of these are different sectors within economic development, but together they create a colorful masterpiece.
