The CEcD exam is made up of 3 parts:
- Multiple Choice/Short Answer: Saturday, September 16, 2023
Questions in this section come directly from the 4 core competency manuals and 2 elective manuals each candidate has selected. - Essay: Saturday, Saturday, September 16, 2023
This section requires candidates to answer questions for the core competencies: Business Retention & Expansion; Credit Analysis/Finance; and Real Estate Development & Reuse. Candidates are able to choose to answer 2 additional questions from the list of 8 elective questions. - Oral Interview: Sunday, September 17, 2023
To take this section, candidates must pass both the multiple-choice/short answer and essay sections. Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of three current CEcDs and those who pass are newly minted Certified Economic Developers!

Exam Transfer Fee
If an exam candidate requests to sit for an exam at a later date than what they had originally applied for, they will incur a fee of $100 if the request is made within 15 days of the original exam. Candidates may transfer their exam application up to one year from the exam date they originally applied for. Candidates will need to submit a new application and remit an additional application fee should they not sit for an exam within this timeframe.
Exam Cancellation Fee
If a candidate requests to cancel their application to sit for the certification exam within 15 days of the exam, they will lose their application payment and incur an additional fee of $100.
Application Forms
The application deadline is August 20, 2023.
Completed CEcD applications with payment must be submitted 30 days before the exam date. Candidates will be notified of their approval or non-approval status one month before their exam date.

CEcD Exam Essentials Workshop
The CEcD Exam Essentials workshop will provide attendees with a complete overview of the Certified Economic Developer exam process and provide you with tools and techniques that can be used for preparing for the certification exam. This workshop is a requirement for individuals who are planning to sit for the certification exam. This workshop is free of charge and is offered at least once virtually, as well as during the IEDC Annual Conference.
