How long does it take to become an AEDO?
The accreditation process consists of two phases that elicit specific information about the structure, organization, funding, programs, and staff of the candidate economic development organization:
Phase one is a documentation review. Applicants submit documents demonstrating the organization’s development, structure, and activity. The document review process also helps determine if the organization is eligible for accreditation and deserving of a site team visit.
Phase two is a site team visit. The site team assesses the organization in action on a site visit. Members of the AEDO committee conduct the visit to meet with key personnel and community leaders over two days. Following the site visit, the site visit team makes a recommendation on the application. The AEDO committee then votes on the proposal. These results are not a “pass or fail” process. When an organization fails to earn accreditation, the site team will advise the necessary steps to attain accreditation. The organization will receive information and guidance on the areas of the accreditation process that require further development.

What is economic development?
A set of programs and policies that aid in the creation, retention and expansion of jobs, the development of a stable tax base, and the enhancement of wealth. Economic development aims to influence the growth and restructuring of a community’s economy to enhance its well being. This is achieved through job creation and retention, wealth creation for individuals and businesses, tax base enhancements, and improvement in quality of life. While the private sector ultimately creates the jobs, the role of economic development organizations – through the core activities of business recruitment, retention and expansion, and business creation and entrepreneurship – is to create the conditions that better enable businesses to compete and thrive.
What is the Bollinger Foundation?
The Bollinger Foundation raises funds for the education and support of children who have lost one or both parents. Priority is given toward families in which either the deceased parent worked - or the surviving parent continues to work - in the field of public or affordable housing, or community and economic development.
The Foundation - established in 1989 - is named after Steve Bollinger, former Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), from 1981 until his death in 1984. After his death, Steve's wife Lin and their four young children were left to cope with the emotional and financial devastation that only the loss of a spouse and parent can bring.
Before his death, Steve had created an annual golf tournament. For three years, HUD staff, business associates, friends, and families would gather for a day of golf, sunshine, and companionship. After 1984, the Bollinger Open continued. But now the tournament had an additional goal: to raise funds for the Bollinger children's education. To date, the Bollinger Foundation has given away over $1 Million in grants.
In 1989, the Labor Department awarded worker compensation benefits to the Bollinger family. This allowed the golf tournament to serve other families in need who suffered a similar loss of a parent. It was that year that the Foundation was launched, with Lin Bollinger herself providing a generous donation.
